A department in New York is replacing its physical overtime card box with a Tourboard built around its rules — in pilot now, going live in October. Here is what that board does; every one of these came from their rulebook, not ours.
One list, in order, marked Up Next. Take a tour and your card goes to the back. Turn one down with 48+ hours' notice, same. Turn down short notice and your card holds — nobody is punished for not dropping everything.
The lieutenant reads the next person every tour they're eligible for, all at once. Tours they can't work are never offered. Offers, answers, and no-answers are logged with timestamps.
Firefighters request their own time off. Lieutenants approve it against minimum staffing, which the board checks for them. Swaps and out-of-title assignments live in the same place.
Admin, lieutenant, firefighter — each sees only what they need. A firefighter can always tap their own name and see exactly why their card is where it is.
Because it doesn't know what a tour is, why a card moves, or that a silent phone counts as a no. Those rules are the department's culture, and they're different in every house. Tourboard exists to encode yours — exactly, and in writing, so any decision the board makes can be explained to the person it affected.
